During the pandemic, there has been a tendency for a lot of organizations to continue to meet but to drop their social media presence and efforts to reach out for new members. That’s just because things are different, and patterns and habits have been disrupted. Realizing that, we are going to try to ramp up our presence here, let you know what we’re doing, and give you an idea of how you can participate easily, without even leaving your home!
If you want to meet some nice people and get involved in a service organization that continues to do meaningful work, read on!
Manhattan Kiwanis is still delivering meals from the Riley county senior center to our neighbors in Carlson Plaza. We do this each Wednesday. We are also still picking up food from donors for the bread basket every Thursday. Our high school affiliate, Key Club, has continued to serve, most recently by engaging in a project to sew as many masks for those who need them as possible.
We have been meeting weekly on zoom, and discussing upcoming fundraising opportunities. Most recently in fundraising we participated in traffic control for the turkey trot race sponsored by Manhattan Running Company. We plan on enthusiastically helping out on more races in the future. Before that we held a successful Ribeye Raffle. We’ve found ways to raise funds that are safe and beneficial for the community, but we sure miss our annual pancake feed and silent auction and look forward to resuming that next year.
We completed our project of building a handicapped accessible viewing platform on Bluemont Hill overlooking the giant Manhattan sign that we help to maintain. We are still working on the finer points, including bench placement and signage!
New member fees have been waived this year because of the pandemic. If you have any interest in checking out a service club like ours, one that meets weekly and fosters friendships while getting meaningful service done, then now is a great time to check us out. You don’t even have to leave home, you just need to get in contact with us so we can share our zoom link with you. We meet Tuesday nights at 6 PM. This Tuesday is an exception because of Christmas coming up.
Before Covid, and after Covid, we will be meeting in person. We had been meeting at the four points Tuesdays at 6 PM and will no doubt do that again afterwards. But in the meantime, you can still be part of a great club and not leave home and just check it out and see if it’s for you. And if you’re up to it at some point, you can take part in some safe and meaningful service for our community!
